The Collaborative Integrated Resource Planning Study (CIRPS) is a 30 year resource study for a generic, but very typical, electric service region. The benefit/cost functions will include both the direct costs of service and the external costs to society of the impacts of various energy alternatives. Available energy, renewable, and conservation options will be evaluated over a wide range of uncertainties with regard to costs and climate change impacts. The OSA PowrSym software and the OSA server farm, plus cloud computing resources, will be used to model the thousands of scenarios created by the combination of options and uncertainties. CIRPS is unique in that it is a fully open and transparent process with parties from all view points invited to participate and contribute to the development of the study scenarios. CIRPS will provide an accurate and neutral simulation model allowing all options and view points to be evaluated on a level playing field. Collaboration is accomplished via workshops and an Internet Working Group, see link buttons above. The public can view all parts of the CIRPS website and the CIRPS Working Group discussions, but only members of the working group may participate in the Working Group. See the Membership button above for membership options.
We invite parties with all view points to become members and actively participate in the CIRPS. Our goal is to provide a computational platform and a realistic dataset allowing direct comparison of all type options across a wide range of futures. Members will have differing projections of data, especially when it comes to quantifying environmental and climate effects. CIRPS will accommodate these differing views by running many different scenarios based on input from our members. In addition to the Internet Working Group, we will have Working Group meetings at our Ringgold, GA offices. See the Schedule button above for the schedule of meetings and other events.
The generic electric service region base case is described under the Base Case button above. Note that the Base Case data is subject to adjustment in response to suggestions from the Working Group until the "lock down" date in the schedule. The Options button describes the options that are to be evaluated. The Data Range button describes the range of future data uncertainties to be evaluated. We expect that both the Options list and the Data Range list will expand as the study progresses. The cross product of the Options and Data Ranges will result in thousands of model runs. Study results will be listed under the Results button.
The Papers button will link to technical papers submitted by members. The Sponsors button will list sponsors of the CIRPS project. The Links button will link to information relevant to resource planning.
